Govt considers Constitutional changes after Aboriginal report

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 26 Sep 2002.

The Federal Government has agreed the Constitution should be changed, in
its response to the final report of the Council for Aboriginal
Reconciliation.

The Government is still opposed to a treaty.

Reconciliation Australia, the body which replaced the council, called last
week for all Australian governments to respond to the report by early
December.

The Aboriginal Affairs Minister, Philip Ruddock, says the Government has
met many of the recommendations but does not believe a treaty is
appropriate.

And he will not say when the Government might hold a referendum to change
the constitution.

Mr Ruddock will meet state Aboriginal affairs ministers tommorrow.
