Aboriginal groups welcome findings of petrol sniffing inquiry

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 7 Sep 2002.

Aboriginal welfare groups have welcomed South Australian Coroner Wayne
Chivell's scathing criticism of conditions at some remote Aboriginal
communities.

The coroner made the comments in his findings from the petrol sniffing
inquest conducted in the Pitjantjatjara lands in the state's north.

The inquest was conducted earlier this year in response to the petrol
sniffing related deaths of three Aboriginal people in as many years.

The coroner found the problem was partly due to socioeconomic factors such
as poverty, and described conditions in the communities as a disgrace
which should shame the nation.

Andrew Biven from the Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council welcomed the
findings, but said the problems had been known for years.

He said action now had to be taken.

"I think we can point fingers and blame all over the place if we choose to
but I'd prefer to point the finger forward and say what can we, will we do
about it," he said.

The South Australian Government says it will address the issue as a matter
of urgency.
