Thousands take in indigenous culture at Garma Festival

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on Aug 15th, 2002.

More than 1,000 people have pitched tents overlooking the Arnhem
escarpment at the annual Garma Festival.

Plenty is happening at the week-long festival that celebrates the exchange
of cultural information.

Yesterday's workshops at Gulkula, 40 kilometres from Gove, concentrated on
'Caring for Country' programs.

Galarruwuy Yunupingu opened the session on bush fire management and the
Indigenous rangers scheme.

Mandawuy Yunupingu led a song cycle on the sea turtle before encouraging
the crowd to paint their faces with traditional clay.

Musicians Paul Mac and David Bridie kept the kids busy with techno gear
and a song writing workshop in four specially set up rehearsal rooms.

The kids will be using their new-found knowledge to play in Saturday
night's concert with Yothu Yindi.
