Call for funds to boost Aboriginal tourism

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on Aug 6th, 2002.

The Indigenous Tourism Leadership Group (ITLG) wants the Federal
Government to inject funds into a venture capital investment scheme to
boost growth in the Aboriginal tourism sector.

The group met the Federal Tourism Minister Joe Hockey at Uluru yesterday
to discuss the scheme that it says would help indigenous tourism operators
develop lucrative business prospects.

ITLG also wants a national accreditation program to strengthen the profile
of appropriate and authentic Aboriginal tourism products.

ITLG spokesman Paul Ah Chee says Mr Hockey has given initial support to
the scheme that would see about $30 million raised from private investors
and the Government.

"This is a real opportunity, it's groundbreaking but it's also under
venture capital," Mr Ah Chee said.

"It's all that support system that's got to be behind it you know - the
management system, the mentoring [of] all of those much-needed things to
ensure that a business is successful and sustainable over a long period of
time," he said.
