NT to organise probe into indigenous retail habits

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on Aug 2th, 2002.

The Consumer Affairs Minister, Peter Toyne, says the Northern Territory
has been asked to organise investigations into national strategies for
managing indigenous consumer issues.

Ministers from around Australia and New Zealand have just wrapped up a
meeting on consumer affairs in Adelaide.

Mr Toyne says the Northern Territory will take a lead role in looking at
specific problem areas for indigenous consumers before reporting back to
Ministerial Council.

"We'd certainly be looking at the credit issue, particularly the book up
in remote stores," he said.

"Also, the sale of used cars to indigenous people right around Australia,
looking at general consumerism and how it impacts on Aboriginal people,
whether its banking or retail services."
