Community farewells Aboriginal artist

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on July 31st, 2002.

A burial ceremony is taking place in central Australia for the acclaimed
Aboriginal artist Kumantjayi Possum Tjapaltjarri.

Dozens of mourners have gathered at the remote community of Yuelamu,
north-west of Alice Springs, for a ceremony which combines traditional
Aboriginal custom with Christian beliefs.

Kumantjayi Possum Tjapaltjarri was one of the founders of the western
desert art movement.

He died six weeks ago but his funeral was delayed by a bitter dispute
between his family and former de facto partner over where he should be
buried.

Last week the Northern Territory Supreme Court ruled in line with the
wishes of his relations that he should lie alongside his brother on his
traditonal country.
