Police considered Hickey high risk inquest hears

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 6 July 2004

The coronial inquest into the death of Thomas Hickey has heard the 17-year-old was considered by police as a high risk-offender at the time of his death.

When Thomas Hickey died in February of this year, many members of the Redfern community believed he was being pursued by police.

The coronial inquest into his death has been told the 17-year-old was classified as a high-risk offender wanted or suspected for stealing offences.

The supervisor of intelligence at Redfern police station, Detective Senior Constable Lee Bailey has told the inquiry a printed profile of TJ Hickey as a person of interest to police would have been put up in the station two months prior to the 17-year-old's death.

But Inspector Bailey said there were a high number of high risk offender profiles in the station at that time, and TJ Hickey would not have stood out.

The hearing continues.
