Minister promises more police for Redfern

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 9 June 2004

New South Wales Police Minister John Watkins has vowed that whatever extra police resources are needed to tackle crime in the troubled Sydney suburb of Redfern will be delivered.

Mr Watkins responded to criticisms by frontline officers about the "woeful" level of resources and training.

The New South Wales Police Union yesterday told a parliamentary inquiry that police resources in Redfern are totally inadequate, with only one officer to investigate the high rate of local robberies.

They also complained that the strike force set up to investigate the recent riot in the suburb is to be wound up at the end of the week, though many of the alleged offenders are yet to be identified.

Mr Watkins says he welcomes the comments and is waiting for a report from the Police Commissioner about resources there.

"I will be guided by the Commissioner, if the Commissioner believes that extra resources, staffing and training are required they will be delivered," he said.

He also says the task force set up after the riot has done as much work as it can do now, but will be re-started if senior police deem it necessary.
