Police may get bravery awards over Redfern riots

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 24 May 2004

New South Wales Police Commissioner Ken Moroney says he will consider giving bravery awards to the police called to respond the Redfern riot.

Commissioner Moroney made the comment at the police union's conference on the state's south coast.

He says the police deserve recognition for their actions.

"There was absolute heroism on the night and I've asked Superintendent Dennis Smith, the commander at Redfern, to provide me with a report and recommendations acknowledging the bravery of those police on that occasion," he said.

"When I have that report to hand, I'll consider those recommendations."
