Officer faces penalty over racist email

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 17 March 2004

The New South Wales Ombudsman will help decide how to discipline a police officer from Bourke who sent a racist email to his colleagues.

The email, which mocks Aboriginal people, was received by 35 officers in four western region stations, including Dubbo, Bourke and Broken Hill.

The officer has since been transferred to Tweed Heads.

Western Region Commander, Morris West, says State Ombudsman Bruce Barbour is expected to make a recommendation on the appropriate penalty sometime in the next three weeks.

"He'll be able to look at the issues, whether the officer was contrite, whether the office spoke to the Aboriginal people in Bourke after the issue and the Aboriginal liaison officers who work with the police, a whole range of things," he said.

"When the Ombudsman is okay with all that, we sit down and work out the appropriate penalty."
