NT massacre mourned 75 years on

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 24 September 2003

More than 1,000 people are expected to gather in central Australia this morning to mark one of Australia's worst massacres.

A board of inquiry in late 1928 found that at least 31 people were killed in a series of reprisal raids led by police constable George Murray earlier that year.

But some suggest the death toll was double that figure.

The killings followed the murder of Frederick Brookes, apparently by an Aboriginal man known as Bullfrog.

The reprisals started on August 16 and continued for a month.

Relatives of both constable Murray and the victims will attend today's ceremony at Brookes Soak near Yuendumu, north-west of Alice Springs.

The Central Land Council says it hopes commemorating the 75th anniversary of the massacre will promote reconciliation.
