WA Govt keeps quiet over Burrup approval conditions

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 14 Feb 2003

The Western Australian Government says it will not release the conditions
behind approvals given to major resources companies to build on
significant Aboriginal sites in the north-west unless the companies agree.

The Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee has given conditional consent
for the construction of a methanol plant, an ammonia and urea plant, and
other associated infrastructure on the Burrup Peninsula near Karratha.

Opposition leader Colin Barnett says the Burrup is a site of significant
Aboriginal culture and world heritage and its development should not be
shrouded in secrecy.

The peninsula features rock engravings considered to be the oldest in the
world.

"I think the Government is required to be absolutely open...as to the
conditions and the approvals of any projects that take place on the Burrup
Peninsula," he said.
