A national reconciliation group says the younger generation will carry on
the fight for justice for Australia's indigenous people.

About 50,000 "hands" will be planted at Redfern Park, in Sydney's inner
west, today as Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTAR)
celebrate the fifth anniversary of the "Sea of Hands" project.

The project began in 1997 with the planting of plastic hands symbolising
non-indigenous Australians' support of native title and reconciliation.

ANTAR national president Phil Glendenning says the younger generation have
a better understanding of the true history of Australia.

"I think it's fairly clear that this young generation of people, who
unlike the older generation, are growing up with the truth," Mr
Glendenning said.

"Through their education they know the truth of Australian history and
issues like the stolen generations," he said.

Since 1997, nearly three million hands have been planted around the nation
and the world, symbolising non-indigenous Australians' support for native
title and co-existence.
