Mabo family furious at website sale

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on Aug 8th, 2002.

The son of late land rights campaigner Eddie Mabo has expressed anger and
outrage over the proposed sale of a website containing his family's name.

A website bearing the Mabo family's name is being offered for sale for a
six-figure sum.

The website is up for sale for a non-negotiable price of

Included in the price is the domain internet address, the website and the
business name Mabo Australia.

Eddie Mabo junior says the family has no association with the website and
he is concerned about the use of his family's name.

"It is absolutely unacceptable and we want something done about it," Mr
Mabo said.

"They didn't contact the family or ask permission, a simple phone call or
a letter would have been nice."

Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action spokesman Les
Malezer has questioned the morality of the sale.

"In this situation, the fact that the person is trying to sell it for a
large amount of money and is treating it as a commercial exploitation of a
prominent indigenous person is morally wrong," he said.

The Gold Coast-based owners of the site prefer not to comment, however a
disclaimer on the site states it has no association with the Mabo family.
